My Top Ten Films of 2018

Hey it’s the new year again, and if you’re one of the select few folks bothering to read this, firstly many thanks, but yes, I know, I know. I made a grand announcement about starting to write regularly again them almost immediately stopped, I might go into why in some rambling self-indulgent post at some point but for now I thought, if I’m going to give it another shot, what better way to start than with a good old top 10 list.

As always, I must begin by pointing out all the major acclaimed releases that have not been released where I live, such as; If Beale Street Could Talk, The Favourite, Wildlife, Suspiria, Widows, Cold War, Shoplifters and probably a few more. They simply can’t be included.

a fantastic womanSecondly, I always go back-and-forth on whether or not to include last years’ ‘awards season’ movies that don’t get released internationally until the following year. With a couple of exceptions, I generally err on the side of deeming them ineligible. Partly because I just feel a bit pointless talking about them again now, and partly as a pathetic form of protest at the international release schedule. If distributors don’t want to make these films available for general audiences to see, insignificant amateur bloggers like me will leave them off ‘best-of’ lists. For what its worth though, my favourite films from last years’ batch were I, Tonya, The Florida Project and A Fantastic Woman (above pic). I quite enjoyed what ultimately turned out to be the big winner; The Shape of Water, but it wouldn’t have made my list last year or this.

One more thing, I found ordering movies a lot tougher this year, other than a couple they could have probably gone in almost any order, including a number of the honourable mentions. Also, a surprising number of movies that examine faith and/or cults this year. Maybe there’s a thinkpiece in that but that’s for another time, on with the list. Continue reading
